Sleep Better Not Longer
There are many methods which a person may try in their efforts to sleep better. Depending on the degree in which insomnia affects a person this quest may sometimes be easier said than done. This is a large part of the reason why so many individuals try so many different methods to sleep better.
When it comes to sleep many people believe that how much they sleep is more important than how they sleep. The truth of the matter is that quantity is much less important than quality. A person who sleeps ten to twelve hours may often wake up still feeling tired and un-rested whereas another person may sleep only six to eight hours and feeling rested and full of energy. This is because the quality of sleep has nothing to do with how long you sleep but rather how well you sleep.
There are many steps which a person may take to help them to sleep better. While some steps are as simple as changing the position in which you sleep to purchasing a new mattress for your bed others are a bit more complicated.
There are several other steps which can increase the quality of your sleep. Some of these steps include:
- Exercise
- Maintain a regular schedule
- Don’t eat right before bed
- Avoid caffeine in the evenings
- Keep the room dark
- Turn off the television
If you work at a job that requires little or no physical exertion this lack of physical activity can actually make it more difficult to sleep. Your body uses physical exertion as a way of expelling excess energy. If this energy is not expelled then it accumulates making it difficult to fall asleep quickly.
Keeping to a regular schedule is another way to help you sleep better. This is because over time your body will become accustomed to falling asleep at a certain time. Once this schedule is established the body will become tired and feel the need for sleep around this time each night.
Avoiding caffeine in the evening hours is another simple way to help you to sleep better. Caffeine is a stimulant therefore when it is consumed it prevents a person from falling asleep. Limiting the intake of caffeine can greatly increase a person’s quality of sleep.
When you keep the room dark it tells your body that it is time to sleep. This in turn makes it easier to fall asleep. Turn off all lights and televisions to help you have a better chance of sleeping well. Because television not only produces light but is also very distracting it should be avoided when attempting to go to sleep.
